How do I install the firmware on my router?

If you have a Linksys WRT series Wireless LAN router, you can easily update it via the web interface with a firmware from our download section.

On the pages of the openWRT project you can find a list of supported Wireless LAN routers that also run with our firmware. All routers that carry the designation "supported" and have at least 4 MB flash and 16 MB RAM memory should be working fine. Linksys routers can be conveniently updated via the browser.

Flashing of Linksys routers via the Linksys web interface

  • Start a web browser and connect it to the router according to the  instructions in the router's manual. Inside the packaging of the Linksys router you will probably find a note telling you to install the CD before opening the admin application for the first time and remove the sticker from the LAN ports only after doing that. You can ignore these instructions.

  • Then choose the page "Administration – update firmware".
  • Select the firmware image you got from our download section as the file. Note: For Linksys routers make sure you know whether you have a WRT54GL, an old WRT54G or an old WRT54GS model and choose the right version for it. You can find out which model you have from the sticker on the router's bottom.
  • Click on the "Update" button now to install the firmware on the router. The following sequence will then take place:

    • For about 45 seconds the power LED will flash. Then you will see the message "Update successful". If you then click on "Proceed" you won't see a new page because the router is still busy arranging its internal configuration. That's totally normal.
    • After about 20 seconds the power LED will stop flashing and the DMZ LED will light up. The new firmware is now already running and reconfiguring the router.
    • After about 60 seconds the DMZ LED will stop shining and the router is ready.
  • Under the address "192.168.1.1" the router is now reachable via the LAN cable.

  • The username and password for the web interface is "admin".

  • For the ssh access the root password is also "admin".
